Blending Learning Classroom

Topic: Watersheds in the Environment

Prerequisite: The Water Cycle

Grade:8

The blending learning course is a learning extension of material learned in the classroom. Based on your study of the water cycle where you learned about you precipitation, condensation and evaporation. This science unit will be about watersheds in your community. Everyone across the United States lives under or near a watershed, also known as a basin. When rain water or sewage rain runs on the ground, the water is collected into a basin and re-enters our lakes, rivers, wetlands, oceans and ponds. Through precipitation Watersheds are important in our community because they filter the water we use to drink and bathe. –boating, fishing and swimming

The blended course will allow you to explore the topic through inquiry learning. You will use science investigation tools to help you develop problem solving skills and read and understand case studies. From the blended learning course you will:

  • Learn about watersheds in your community

  • Locate, describe and sketch your local watershed

  • Describe ways you would help to protect your watershed

Prior Instruction – The Water Cycle

The water cycle shows the process of how water enters and leaves our atmosphere. The water cycle sometimes referred to the hydrologic cycle is the evaporation of water from ponds, rivers and oceans. Water evaporates from the earth and water molecules from condensation forms to get water to return to our environment.

For example, terminal objective for students studying watersheds:

Watershed Overall Objective:

Watersheds help protect our environment and community. Watersheds filter the environment water when dirty water drains back into our water supply from sewage pipes and rivers. Eighth grade students will identify and locate watersheds that serve their state and local community and describe how they can protect watersheds so people can continue having safe water to drink.

  • Define a watershed

  • Learn about the importance of watersheds to the environment

  • Human beings impacts on watersheds

  • Strategies to protect watersheds
